Automation solutions provider ACTOM Smart Technologies is playing a key role in advancing smart grid capabilities across Africa, with a strong focus on improving utility efficiency, reliability and revenue recovery. Through its integrated portfolio of smart metering, substation automation and energy management systems, the company is enabling utilities to move toward more intelligent, data-driven operations.
Smart grids are already delivering tangible benefits in terms of efficiency and reliability. ACTOM’s IEC61850-compliant substation automation systems, combined with advanced protection relays and real-time monitoring tools, allow utilities to better manage network performance, respond faster to faults and maintain stability across transmission and distribution networks. These systems enhance visibility and control at substation level, forming a critical backbone for modern grid infrastructure.
Digitisation is central to this transformation. ACTOM’s smart metering and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solutions provide utilities with granular, real-time data on consumption, load profiles and network conditions. This enables improved demand-side management, remote connection and disconnection, and accurate billing, all of which contribute to reduced non-technical losses and improved revenue collection. The company’s successful deployment of large-scale smart metering projects, including early AMI implementations in Africa, demonstrates how digital technologies can sustainably recover revenue and enhance operational visibility.
AI-driven demand forecasting and grid optimisation are supported by the data-rich environment created through these systems. With access to detailed usage patterns and event data, utilities can better anticipate demand fluctuations, optimise load management and proactively address potential outages. ACTOM’s software platforms, including Head End Systems and energy management solutions such as Energy Management Systems and Advanced Distribution Management Systems, provide the analytical foundation needed for these advanced capabilities.
However, implementing smart grid technologies is not without challenges. Many utilities face constraints related to capital expenditure, skills shortages and legacy infrastructure integration. ACTOM addresses these barriers through hosted automatic meter reading and smart metering services, enabling customers to adopt digital solutions without significant upfront investment or technical complexity. The company’s ability to integrate with legacy protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus further supports a phased transition to modern grid systems.
Looking ahead, the future of smart grids in Africa is closely tied to continued digitisation, increased automation and stronger data utilisation. With local manufacturing capabilities and extensive engineering expertise, ACTOM is well positioned to support utilities as they modernise their networks, improve resilience and transition toward smarter, more efficient energy systems.
